A
Texas man claiming that he paid someone to intentionally infect grocery
shoppers with coronavirus has been arrested by the FBI.
Christopher
Perez is facing one count of false information and hoaxes related to
weapons of mass destruction in connection with the incident,
News 4 reported.
According
to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice, the 39-year-old
San Antonio man posted the threat to social media because “he was
trying to deter people from visiting the stores, purportedly in order to
prevent the spread of the virus.”
A
screenshot of the online message was sent on Sunday to a local law
enforcement group called the Southwest Texas Fusion Center, which in
turn alerted the FBI.
Following
a brief investigation, law enforcement officers determined Perez’s post
was just a hoax and confirmed no stores in the San Antonio area were
affected.
Perez
was taken into custody in his home Tuesday night. If he is convicted on
the charge, he faces up to five years in federal prison.
